He is our Everlasting Father

 Thank the Lord for his  fatherly heart of affection for us. Praise the Lord that He is our protector and provider. Tell him your burdens. Cast your anxieties on Him because He cares for you. Receive His loving care.

Read Isaiah 9:6

...and his name shall be called...
Everlasting Father...

Has this name of Jesus ever confused you? We know from the rest of Scripture that the son is not the Father. That would be modalism. The Son doesn’t take different forms, sometimes as the Father or the Spirit. That is heresy. So what is this saying? This Scripture is not saying that Jesus is THE Father, but rather that Jesus functions in a fatherly way in regards to his provision and protection for his people. As a shepherd guards, provides for, and protects His sheep, so Jesus’ as our Good Shepherd and Everlasting Father guards, protects and provides for us. And, as Steve Lawson says, “He fathered eternity”. Jesus fathered everlasting life. He is the very source of eternal life. All his children receive this gift. The Son has many different ways to relate to us. He is like a friend to us.  He is like a brother to us. He is like a husband to us.  He is like a shepherd to us. He is like a master to us. He is like a teacher to us. He is like a counselor to us. He is like a king to us. And yes,  He is like a father to us.

Henry Lyte’s great hymn “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” alludes to this quality of the Messiah.

Fatherlike He tends and spares us,
Well our feeble frame He knows;
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.

He is a father forever. He will not leave us nor forsake us.

What does Psalm 103:13-14 say about the Lord’s heart toward His people?

What does this passage teach us about God?

What does this passage teach us about ourselves?
